Peter Der Manuelian, Philip J. King Professor of Egyptology and Director of the Harvard Semitic Museum, has just been awarded a $3000 Harvard University Provostial Fund for the Arts and Humanities. This will be used to augment and enhance our free Egyptian augmented reality app called “Dreaming the Sphinx,” which works in the Harvard Semitic Museum second floor gallery or at home (downloadable from Apple App Store or Google Play Store). The app takes the visitor to the famous Dream Stela of King Thutmose IV, set up between the front legs of the Sphinx at Giza. It provides a translation of the hieroglyphic text, projects the Sphinx in augmented reality at three different periods in time (Old Kingdom, New Kingdom, and present day), and transports the user to standing at Giza in front of the Sphinx, with a 360-degree view. We’ll be adding new features to the app with this grant.

Congratulations, Peter!
