Abstract:
"The existing wide-ranging body of archaeological (material culture) evidence and the written monuments in Sogdian represent Sogdiana as an ethno-religiously diverse society. The available data provides us information not only about what religions existed, but also about confessional forms of these religions - that is what deities, rituals, special observances and ‘faith practices’ existed and were current at the chronology represented by this evidence. Further, the specific features of the existing material are indicative of complex socio-political and economic orders, contexts and contacts responsible for development of plurality and diversity of cultural expressions.
In this talk I will seek to explore the Sogdian religious life in example of material evidence pertinent to Buddhism. I will seek to explore the topic through the notion of ‘space’ to focus on relational dimensions, like interconfessional, interethnic and intercultural."
