The Workshop on Arabic and Islamic Studies (WAIS) presents

Almohad Architecture (exact lecture title TBA)

A discussion with Abbey Stockstill, doctoral student in the History of Art and Architecture Department, Harvard University

The centerpiece of Almohad Marrakesh is undoubtedly their dynastic mosque, built in the midtwelfth century and known as the Kutubiyya for the bookseller’s market in which it was located. This paper will explore not only the mosque’s role as the spiritual and social heart of the city, but also howthat role was echoed in the dynasty’s ceremonial and urban works. Particularly under the reign of ʿAbd al-Muʾmin, this role is all the more significant for the ties it makes to the local landscape and theAlmohads’ heritage as Berbers and religious reformers. The paper is an early draft of a chapter for an edited volume on the Friday mosque and the city, and where sanctity lies in the urban fabric.

WAIS aims to act as a collegial forum for graduate students to share their work and exchange ideas. Any graduate student with interests in pre-colonial Middle East history, whatever their department or method, is welcome to participate. Discussion centers on a paper circulated several days in advance via an email list, which you can join by contacting Caitlyn Olson (caitlynolson@fas.harvard.edu) or Arjun Nair (anair@fas.harvard.edu). We are also happy to respond to questions or comments and hope to see you at the workshop!

Light food and drink will be served.
