"The Ordeal of Jacob Sasportas: Jewish Messianism and the Sephardic Diaspora in the Seventeenth Century"

Yaacob Dweck is an associate professor of history and Judaic studies. His first book, The Scandal of Kabbalah: Leon Modena, Jewish Mysticism, Early Modern Venice appeared in 2011. The book was a finalist for the 2012 Best First Book in the History of Religions Award, American Academy of Religion and an honourable mention for the 2014 Jordan Schnitzer Award in medieval and early modern Jewish history, Association for Jewish Studies. He is currently writing a study of Jacob Sasportas, a critic of the seventeenth-century Jewish Messiah named Sabbetai Sevi.
