# Declan Maloney Ancient Near Eastern Studies Subfield: Akkadian & Sumerian Studies Ph.D. candidate ![maloney](/sites/g/files/omnuum4571/files/styles/hwp_4_5__320x400/public/nelcnew/files/thumbnail_12715640_1049762598377737_2753889130751764326_n.jpg?itok=46eMBXix) email During my first class at undergraduate at the University of Birmingham, I was introduced to the Epic of Gilgameš, and I have been consumed by Assyriology ever since. This led to undergraduate thesis on the Akkadian empire, then an MPhil at Girton College Cambridge, and a master’s thesis focused on authority in ancient Mesopotamian law codes. I have a general love for Sumerian and Akkadian literature, for the reconstruction of history, and for considering questions about individuals and ‘the state’ through the biased lens of our cuneiform sources. I am particularly excited at the thought of inter-disciplinary work, as I firmly believe this is the future of our discipline.
