James Russell lectured on the image of Zoroaster...

James R. Russell, Mashtots Professor of Armenian Studies, lectured on the image of Zoroaster at the conference at the Univ. of London opening "The Everlasting Flame" exhibition at the Brunei Gallery. He organized and chaired the first joint workshop of the European and American societies for Armenian studies, on Armenian folklore and mythology, at Harvard in September, reading a paper on the Shvot, a house spirit. His publications this winter include the first monograph to explore the invented Seh-lerai language of 19th-century Smyrna, on the basis of newly-discovered archival documents; an article on the demons Harut and Marut; and a study of the Russian decadent writer Alexander Kondratiev in connection with the paintings of Apollinarii Vasnetsov. He is working now on a study of the Armenian Futurist poet Kara Darvish.
